The first thing you need to do is have a home study completed. Unfortunately, some people have missed the opportunity to adopt because they did not have a home study completed at the time that a child became available. Even if you are not certain what type of adoption you want to do, you will always need a home study and it is the first place to start. The person doing the home study should also be able to help you look at all of the options so that you can make the best possible choice for your circumstances.
Who can adopt?
Because there are no limits or discrimination due to age, sex, race, or national origin, almost anyone who desires to adopt and who can pass the criminal background investigation is eligible to adopt. The best thing to do if you want to adopt is to check with several agencies to compare any limits they might have and to compare prices.
How can I tell if I am getting the best price?
With some agencies, there are separate prices for the home study, the updates, and the post-placement supervision, but some agencies put it all together. So be sure to ask what is included in the prices that are given. Some agencies charge more for International home studies because there is a little more work required. But, even more important than price, be sure to get a feel of the person you speak with on the phone, because you will be working with this person and you want to feel comfortable asking questions and sharing personal information with this person or agency.
